Hot Air Balloon Over - Cambridge |
|
| |
Situated at Cambridge Golf Club, Long Stanton, the Virgin Balloon Flight launch site is ideally placed for those wishing to see the historic university city from the air. The university itself dates back to the thirteenth century and perhaps nowhere else in Britain is such architectural and historic beauty packed into such a small area. One of the most enduring images of Cambridge is of a relaxing punt on the Cam, but there is much more to see beyond the city too. Cambridgeshire is a study in two distinct landscapes. To the south are rolling chalk hills, but in the north are the fens, which prior to draining in the 17th century were marshland, dotted with small clumps of higher ground upon which towns such as Ely grew. Ely, named after the eels that would swim in its surrounding shallow marsh waters, boasts the famous Norman cathedral first begun in 1083. Rising above the fens like a beacon the famous 'Lantern Tower' appears almost suspended above the main building and competes only with the nearby Peterborough cathedral, possessing the most impressive medieval architecture in Britain. South of Cambridge at the famous WWII airfield at Duxford is the Duxford Aircraft Museum, housing the largest display of historic aircraft in Europe.
