Hot Air Balloon Flights Over - Nantwich - (Cholmondeley Castle) |
|
| |
Our Virgin Hot Air Balloon launch site sits pride of place within the grounds of the Cholmondeley Castle in the historic half-timbered town of Nantwich with its glorious St Mary's Church. Pronounced Chumley, the gothic 1801 castle's sweeping, majestic lawns, lake and romantic gardens provide the perfect setting for a flight of fantasy. Straddling the banks of the River Weaver, Nantwich's wealth was originally afforded by salt production, although today the town is a thriving market town with a vast array of antique shops, restaurants, pubs and landmark tourist attractions. The local area is known as 'black and white' as a result of the many half-timbered buildings forming the hamlets and towns peppering the landscape. There is every chance that you will look down on traditional villages such as Sandbach with its plethora of Saxon crosses and cobbled market place, Barthomley with its splendid thatched houses and Tarporley which boast its own chocolate factory. You might also glimpse the lovely 14th century church at Malpas, it depends which way the wind takes you. Whilst gazing down, over the wicker of your basket you might wonder at the inspiration behind Lewis Carroll's 'Alice In Wonderland'. The famous son of Daresbury, near Runcorn has his famous wonderland characters immortalised in the stained-glass windows of the local church.
