Raph flies through his forests course with a little help from Virgin Balloon Flights

By Alex, March 26, 2010 3:40 pm
Raphael Tsanga has graduated from a pioneering education centre aimed at protecting tropical rain forests and the rights of indigenous people in the Congo Basin, after Virgin Balloon Flights funded his studies.
The 28-year-old from Yaounde, Cameroon, is one of six students who have just completed the first course at the Centre for Social Excellence (CSE) – part of  TFT’s The Climate Tree initiative.

Raph makes his final presentation

Raphael, known to friends as Raph, learned about all the issues of deforestation and the implications for local and indigenous communities during the in-depth nine month course, which included classroom and work-based training.

At Virgin Balloon Flights we have donated £1 for every tonne of carbon our business created in 2009 to the Climate Tree which aims to deliver significant climate change benefits through the conservation of forests. We chose to specificallty support the CSE because we wanted to contribute to the well being of people as well as forests.

Raph, who previously graduated from Yaounde University in Public Law, specialising in Environmental Law, says:

“I applied to the CSE for three reasons: to improve my knowledge of tropical forest management and indigenous peoples living in the forest, learn to develop innovative strategies to include local communities into the management of forest resources and master the practical aspects of social forestry.”

While at the CSE, Raph proved himself to be an excellent student and all the teaching staff have nothing but praise for the quality of his work and his commitment. He says learning from the CSE’s well-respected trainers was an emotional experience and he also enjoyed the Congolese cuisine.

“Under the canopy of the forests in the Congo Basin are peoples whose cultural identity and lifestyle depend on this ecosystem. To manage this forest sustainably means extracting timber while taking into account the rights of indigenous peoples to conserve their cultural identity and to benefit from the economic advantages consecutive to the exploitation of the forest resources,” he says.

“To buy wood from a forest sustainably managed means contributing to the upkeep of the ecologic and social integrity of tropical forests; the conservation of the forests of the Congo Basin will be achieved in collaboration with the indigenous populations living there, or it will not be achieved at all.”

Raph’s ambition is to become a quality assurance manager for a forest company. He says:

“In that framework my missions will include the monitoring of management norms, the collation of information and follow-up of legal dispositions relative to social rights, respect for engagements of forest companies towards neighbouring communities or living inside forest management units.”

“It will include the verification of legal origin of timber produced and exported as well as their traceability, all in the aim of production in conformity to FSC principles,” he adds.

One month to go until Virgin Marathon Madness…

By Eve, March 25, 2010 5:58 pm

The calendar says 25th March. Panic! It is exactly one month until Marathon Day!

As Virgin Balloon Flights’ marathon representation I’ll be running the Shakespeare Marathon (Stratford upon Avon) in aid of Macmillan on 25th April 2010.

Our lovely call-centre staff have been mildly amused seeing me jog off enveloped in Lycra© for my lunch-time 5 milers, which luckily seem to be paying off as I survived my first half marathon at the weekend. Yay.

Just like Virgin’s very own Bob Fear who is running the Virgin London Marathon, also 25th April, for Virgin Unite along with Sir Richard Branson himself, I’m in the final 4 weeks of training hell. The difference being that Bob and Sir Richard will be amidst a whopping 36,000 runners and will be lucky enough to see the brand new 70ft Virgin Money hot air balloon that has been specially commissioned by Virgin Balloon Flights to support the event.

My Virgin Money Giving page has made fundraising a doddle and gives everyone a chance to learn what all this running is in aid of whilst my training blog, describes the ongoing agony. Virgin Balloon Flights will be supporting both myself and Bob Fear’s fundraising efforts by holding charity auctions for hot air balloon rides. Thanks VBF :-)

Nobby the Ninja Balloon Pilot

By Alex, March 24, 2010 12:50 pm

Nothing can stop Virgin Balloon pilot Mark Simmons (AKA ‘Nobby’) as not only is he  feeding the social media addicts on Twitter with updates from the ballooning world, he has also recently received his Ju-Jitsu 2nd Dan Black Belt from Grandmaster den Butler. This officially makes him a tweeting ninja balloon pilot!

Ninja Balloon Pilot Nobby

Virgin balloon pilot Mark 'Nobby' Simmons receives his Ju-Jitsu 2nd Dan Black Belt award from Grand Master Den Butler

The skill of Ju-Jitsu, originally developed by the Samurai, is an unarmed martial art commonly known for its ‘grappling’ techniques and has over time become recognised as a ‘soft’ or ‘harmonised’ sport. It takes many years of dedication to reach Nobby’s level so congratulations from everyone at Virgin Balloon Flights HQ.

Nobby has plans to organise the highest ever martial arts class  in his balloon – so watch this space. He will be helping to make the first Virgin London Marathon an amazing spectacle by tethering one of our super duper Virgin hot air balloons at the race, so keep your eyes peeled for the big red balloon at the start line on the 25th April.

After all that buttering up let’s hope Nobby’s ego can still fit in his balloon basket. You can join him for the experience of a life time with flights from as little as £94.99pp from launch sites including Bristol, Bath, Glastonbury, Cheltenham, Cirencester, Monmouth and Pandy near Cardiff in South Wales.

Virgin balloons to make capital red all over for Virgin London Marathon

By Alex, March 19, 2010 11:32 am
Two Virgin hot air balloons will help to turn the capital city red for the 2010 Virgin London Marathon next month, as the race celebrates its 30th birthday.
Virgin Money Hot Air Balloon in testing

Virgin Money's hot air balloon is put through its paces prior to the Virgin London Marathon - despite the fog!

Pilots and crew from Virgin Balloon Flights will be tethering the two brand new balloons at the start of the marathon on Sunday, April 25, with millions watching.

They include a 70ft tall Virgin Money balloon, called G-VMVM or ‘ Mike’ for short, which has just been completed by Cameron Balloons. It will be under the control of pilot Kevin Meehan from Shropshire, while Mark Simmons from Bath will be the pilot for the other balloon. Both of the experienced flyers will be competing to see whose balloon is on TV the most.

Kenneth Karlstrom, Virgin Balloon Flights’ director and chief pilot, said: “It is fantastic that Virgin is sponsoring the London Marathon and we are thrilled to be involved in such an incredible event.

“We were delighted to be asked to commission the Virgin Money hot air balloon and we are looking forward to showing it off on the day.”

The London Marathon started in 1981 and, following this year’s race, will have raised over half a billion pounds for charity, making it the biggest fundraising event in the world. Around 36,000 runners are expected to take to the capital city’s streets this year, aiming to top last year’s incredible charity haul of £47.2 million.

Virgin Money are aiming to help runners raise more than £250 million for good causes over the next 5 years and have launched Virgin Money Giving a not-for-profit sponsorship website aimed at improving the way donations and Gift Aid are collected, ensuring more money goes to charities. Virgin Money Giving is the official fundraising website for the 2010 Virgin London Marathon and you can find out more at www.virginmoneygiving.org.uk

Virgin hot air balloon stars in Raymond Blanc’s Kitchen Secrets!

By Alex, March 17, 2010 8:44 am

A Virgin balloon has once again popped up where you would least expect it – this time on Raymond Blanc’s Kitchen Secrets show on BBC2.

The programme, which features Raymond’s top culinary tips, at 8.30pm on Monday night showed our Virgin balloon in Oxfordshire soaring over Le Manoir aux Quat’ Saisons, the famous chef’s two-Michelin starred restaurant and hotel.

The balloon, piloted by Mark Shemilt, came in to view 16 minute 26 seconds into the show after a feature about water-cress and it is currently available to see on BBC’s iPlayer.

Mark, who holds two ballooning world records, takes lucky passengers on champagne balloon flights from Oxford, Henley-on-Thames, High Wycombe, Alton and Basingstoke.

Mark said: “It was a really nice suprise to hear that we had appeared on Raymond Blanc’s show. Sometimes we do fly over Le Manoir aux Quat’ Saisons in Oxfordshire and it’s a beautiful place. Perhaps next time we’ll get invited in for a bite to eat!”

This was not the first time a Virgin balloon has appeared on a prime time cookery programme as Gary Rhodes once cooked a full meal onboard a flight with Mark Simmons, our pilot in south west of England.

See our Virgin balloon on Raymond Blanc’s Kitchen Secrets on BBC iPlayer.

Virgin balloon pilot; virgin Tweeter!

By Kirsty, March 15, 2010 5:37 pm

So our wonderful new blog is up and running and following the success of our Facebook and Twitter pages we figured the best way to give you an insight into the life of a pilot is to get them to guide you through their daily duties with snippets of factual, interesting or just for fun information directly from themselves.

For many millions of people Twitter is the preferred way to socially interact with others and tell them in as many words as a text message what they’re doing, thinking or believe in. So you’ve guessed it … there’s a new tweeter in town and he is none other than our very own VBF pilot Mark Simmons better known to friends and colleagues as “Nobby!”

A commercial hot air balloon pilot since 1991 Mark has flown more than 80 different balloons in over 30 countries and is a double world record holder, to this day holding the record for being the youngest pilot to captain a balloon across the English Channel in 1991 at the age of just 21; impressive hey!

Receive more impressive info and tweets about preparations to fly from Ashton Court, Bristol; ballooning flights from Royal Victoria Park, Bath; Glastonbury; Cheltenham; Cirencester; Monmouth and Pandy near Cardiff in South Wales. No time like the present; follow Mark now!

Virgin Balloon Flights soar in to sponsor Wray Scarecrow Festival

By Kirsty, March 15, 2010 11:13 am

“I could while away the hours, conferrin’ with the flowers, consultin’ with the rain. And my head I’d be scratchin’, while my thoughts were busy hatchin’. If I only had a brain” – Scarecrow, The Wizard of Oz

If someone asked me what I thought about when they said ‘scarecrow’, I would most probably acquire a glum felt tone of voice and tunefully (or not) begin with ‘I could while away the hours…’ which is of course the sad song of the Scarecrow from the much loved tale The Wizard of Oz!

Mention this familiar figure of the rural landscape to a resident of Wray in Lancashire, and I’m sure they could tell you they’ve built a few, seen a few and definitely celebrated their being. Every year the Wray Scarecrow Festival runs as part of the village country fair, where residents display their themed scarecrows around the village. This year Virgin Balloon Flights are sponsoring the event with the most super duper scarecrow winning its creators a flight for two over the festival!

Four lovely new Virgin balloons take to the skies!

By Alex, March 12, 2010 3:55 pm

More people are set to experience champagne balloon flights across the UK this year as we have added four massive new hot air balloons to our fleet.

The red balloons which stand 120ft tall when inflated will be taking people on balloon rides from some of our 100+ launch sites across the country as the new season has begun this month.

The balloons will carry baskets of up to 16 passengers and will replace smaller balloons which are being retired. This will further increase the capacity of the  fleet which flew over 30,000 people in 2009.

Cameron Balloons have supplied the balloons which are all 400s (they hold 400,000 cubic feet of air) and are registered as G-VBFV ‘Victor’, G-VBFL ‘Lima’, G – VBFX ‘Xray’ and G – VBFY ‘Yankee’. Three of the balloons will be flying in Essex, Somerset and Bedfordshire respectively.

Kenneth Karlstrom, director and chief pilot, said: “As the UK’s leading balloon rides company, we are fully committed to ensuring the safety and comfort of our passengers. Despite the difficult trading conditions in recent times, this is the fifth year in a row that we have made significant investment in our balloon network.

“We are confident that we have the most modern fleet anywhere in the world. We’re hoping to have a fantastic summer this year and to fly more people than ever before.”

In 2009 we gave two retired balloon envelopes to Worn Again the sustainable products and services company which created range of bags and jackets called Bon Voyage! A percentage of profits from sales go to the sustainable lifestyles charity Anti-Apathy.
