Balloons Over - Rutland Water |
|
| |
Leicestershire lying right in the very heart of England and covering an area of almost 1000 square miles includes what was once England's smallest county - Rutland, home to our Virgin Hot Air Balloon launch site. Rutland Water, home to our launch site is a vast body of water, the largest man-made lake in Western Europe in fact, covering a staggering 3,100 acres. A visually stunning landmark, the lake and nature reserve offer an outstanding variety of wildlife, sports and places of interest to visit, including the nearby Normanton Church Museum, which dates from 1826. A pretty little museum dedicated to the history and the making of the reservoir and reached by its own causeway, there is much to intrigue and inform within its walls. Widely recognized as great walking country, Leicestershire's grassy uplands, Charnwood Forest and Vale of Belvoirs are an all year round magnet for earth bound explorers and consequently an equal treat for our breed of air-borne adventurers. A few minutes into your flight and you might be glancing down on the splendid Great Hall of Oakham Castle, all that remains of this 12th Century fortress, perhaps an inspiration for Shakespeare's Leicestershire based tragedy King Lear. This is the very heart of England, embodying all that is typical of beautiful midlands countryside, making the county worthy of taking a balloon basket view of one summer's day.
