Primary Site Backup Site hot air balloon rides over carlisle
Better known as the ‘Border City’, Carlisle hosts bygone tales of fortresses and castles, regiments and railways beneath its commercial reincarnation of the 21st Century. Historically inhabited to serve the forts of Hadrian’s Wall, the county town sits just 10 miles south of the Scottish Border and is a perfect starting point for your balloon flight over Cumbria.
Based at the famous Carlisle Racecourse, this Virgin Hot Air Balloon launch site is perfectly placed for those eager to discover their city by balloon and explore a wealth of views impossible to see on foot. The racecourse itself continues the Cumbrian traditions of the ‘Cumberland Plate’ and ‘Carlisle Bell’ races which date back to the 16th century… who knows you may see a steeple chase on your in-air adventure.
Amongst its innumerable sights, Carlisle will offer up an abundance of things to see from below the basket, whether it be the 900-year-old Castle of Carlisle built with ‘William II England’ at the helm of the country, or perhaps Carlisle Priory. Whichever way you fly you’ll be sure to explore the turning world below like never before.
Just north of your launch site and a likely spot from the sky is the beautiful Upperby Park, home to Hammonds Pond which was formally nicknamed ‘Pleasureland’! Maybe the wind will take you west and you can float over the tree tops of Brownelson and Dalston Hall woods, or you could be following the carved out path of a meandering river.
Wherever the wind may take you on your hot air balloon flight, Carlisle is a perfect starting point for an unforgettable experience.
