Nestled in the Colne Valley along the banks of the River Colne, Earls Colne is a village in Essex dating before 1086 just north east of this Essex launch site.
Launching from the site of a former American Airforce WW2 airbase two and a half miles north of Coggeshall, once airborne in your hot air balloon you will rise above this historic village which is situated on the old Roman road between Colchester and St. Albans. Coggeshall ranked in importance alongside Colchester in its importance in the wool trade in 15th, 16th and 17th centuries and is now a lovely old-world town with fine timer-framed buildings including Grange Barn; founded in 1140 and now all that remains of the former abbey. See if you can spot the Victorian clock tower.
Look out for Colne Valley Park which covers 43 square miles with rolling chalk hills, wetlands, large woodland blocks and many historical parkland trees. The park is home to many species of bird and wildlife.
If your balloon carries you westwards you will find the town of Braintree drifting beneath your basket whilst looking to the east you’ll spot Britain’s oldest recorded town, Colchester. Colchester is famous for its zoo and castle and attracts over 4.5 million visitors per year – a perfect place to go for a wander and reflect on the magic of your hot air balloon ride once you have landed and enjoyed your Champagne toast!
