With somewhere as beautiful as West Sussex, a balloon flight from anywhere would provide a wonderful view, but Fernhurst just seemed like the perfect spot to us. We can’t quite put out finger on why exactly, but this pretty village on the Weald just captures the real charm of south east England. As you rise slowly into the blue yonder above you’ll see how Fernhurst was originally developed around crossroads – The Cross – and the village green. You will become somewhat of an airborne archaeologist as you look down on a settlement which dates back to the Stone Age. Look out for St Margaret’s church which dates back to c.1100. The patchwork landscape, dotted with prestigious country estates and tiny hamlets, will rise and fall beneath your basket as Fernhurst is surrounded by imposing hills ruled by the highest in Sussex, Blackdown, at 919ft to the north east. The terrain makes it a very popular walking country, but surely airborne rambling is the best there is? Depending on the wind, you may head north towards Haslemere and on a clear day the urban sprawl of London in the far distance will act as a nice contrast to the rural idle which will sweep away before you. Likewise, when you reach cruising altitude, the south coast and sea beyond may well come into view. After your landing and a traditional champagne toast, you’ll be whisked back to Fernhurst where it would perhaps be poor form not to sample a celebratory drop of local ale at the old Red Lion pub? directionsWest Sussex/ Surrey Leave the A3 at the A333 for Hindhead.
