Forming part of the Pennines, the upland country of Bowland is dominated by a central upland core of deeply incised gritstone fells with summits of over 450m and vast tracts of heather covered peat moorland. The Forest of Bowland is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and a truly breathtaking spot from which to launch into the vast skies in a hot air balloon.
Ascending from the distinguished Stonyhurst College, founded in 1593, with its history as one of Britain’s leading Catholic boarding schools, you’ll rise over the beautiful county of Lancashire.
If the wind carries you to the east the pretty town of Clitheroe in the Ribble Valley will be seen beneath your balloon basket, look out for Clitheroe Castle, one of Lancashire’s oldest buildings, which is argued to be the smallest Norman keep in England and stands atop a 35m outcrop of limestone.
To the south you see views over Blackburn and on to the West Pennine Moors on the southern edge of the Ribble Valley.
With wild expanses of moorland and estate landscapes, the fringe of foothills of the fells, steep sided wooded valleys and the lower lying rivers this is truly a magnificent backdrop above which to experience an airborne adventure.directionsStonyhurst College Stonyhurst Clitheroe Lancashire BB7 9PZ Exit M6 at Junction 31 onto the A59 towards Skipton.
