Our long and winding search for a stunning launch site in Nottinghamshire has led us to the gates of Kelham Hall.
If a building could have an identity crisis, this Victorian mansion near Newark-on-Trent most certainly would have one. It will charm you with its Gothic architecture, striking red brick and tall towers – not surprising really; as it was designed by famous architect Sir George Gilbert Scott before he created the heralded Midland Hotel at St Pancras Station in London.
However, if it wasn’t for a massive fire in 1857, a very different Georgian building would be greeting your eyes. The house, just 20 miles from Nottingham, was reconstructed at least once before that! So, Kelham Hall could be forgiven for being slightly confused, but we’re 100 per cent certain a Virgin Balloon Flight from its glorious grounds will be a special one.
Once you are drifting high above the Nottinghamshire countryside, Newark-on-Trent, once known as ‘the key to the North’, will come into view.
The market town’s crown jewel, the spectacular remains of a 12th century castle alongside the winding River Trent, may pass below your basket.
Keep your camera poised for the cobbled market place and the imposing Church of St Magdalene with its spire, amongst the town’s many timbered framed buildings.

NG23 5QX Kelham Hall is situated on the A617 just to the West of Newark
and within a few minutes drive from the A1 and A46 trunk routes.
If travelling from Newark on the A617 continue over the narrow
bridge and past the next entrance into the new houses. The main
drive is signposted Newark and Sherwood District Council
offices.
Use the parking spaces outside the main building and walk over
to the balloon which launches from the main field adjacent to this
building and the A617.
