Rutland Water is Anglian Water’s reservoir in the county of Rutland (the UK’s smallest county) constructed in 1976 and the largest man-made lake in western Europe covering a staggering 3,100 acres of countryside and with a fabulous 25 mile circular track superb for walking, cycling and Osprey spotting. The Osprey have made their home at Rutland Water since 1994 and were the first to breed in England for 150 years. The area has been designated a Special Protection Area of international importance and is a fantastic place to begin your airborne adventure.
The lake and nature reserve offer an outstanding variety of wildlife, sports and places of interest to visit, including the nearby Normanton Church Museum dating back to 1826. The pretty little museum is dedicated to the making of the reservoir and is reached by its own causeway.
Widely recognized as great walking country, the grassy uplands, Charnwood Forest and Vale of Belvoir to name but a few are all year round magnets for explorers and an equal treat for our airborne adventurers.
A few minutes into your flight and you might spot the splendid Great Hall of Oakham Castle, all that remains of this 12th century fortress, perhaps an inspiration for Shakespeare's Leicestershire based tragedy King Lear.
This is the very heart of England, embodying all that is typical of beautiful midlands countryside, making the county worthy of taking a balloon basket view from anything up to 5,000.directionsRutland Water launch site:- Rutland Water Oakham Rutland Leicestershire LE15 8RN Turn off from the A1 by Stamford on the A606 towards, Rutland Water Oakham, and Melton.
