St Albans, Hertfordshire’s oldest town, still wears its Roman heritage with pride and a balloon flight from here is sure to be a banquet for your eyes.
After the Roman conquest of Britain in AD 43 the town became the largest settlement until the revolt of Boudicca in AD 60 – 61 which saw it fall as it was burnt down. But many telltale signs of its heritage remain to this day.
Out on the outskirts of St Albans itself, in the attractive 35 acre grounds of Nicholas Breakspear Roman Catholic School, Virgin Balloon Flights’ launch site is found.
From here an array of historic attractions promise to catch your eye as you rise towards the clouds. One such delight is the Abbey Church which dominates the city's skyline and reveals Ancient Roman bricks salvaged from the original ruins of Verniamium.
Just a stones throw away is the Roman theatre which was originally used for large audiences to watch bear baiting and cock fighting. Next door are the fascinating foundations of a Roman town house, Roman shops and a sacred shrine.
St Albans clock tower, which was built between 1403 and 1412 as a look out, could also appear beneath the basket before you set out over the county’s beautiful landscape beyond.
Hail St Albans – a glorious starting point for unforgettable experience.
