The claim of Sir Walter Scott, no less, following his visit to the town, made up of an intriguing mix of narrow passageways and cobbled streets opening into spacious squares.
With its compliment of five medieval churches, a 12th century priory and 15th century hospital, all jostling with other fine Georgian and Medieval buildings within the town, Stamford today still retains much of what prompted Scott's fond remark.
Scott's affections are echoed, it seems, by the BBC who chose Stamford as the location for its successful costume drama "Middlemarch". Having removed the odd streetlight, road sign and a few television aerials, it was possible for the actors to be filmed walking the streets of Georgian Stamford, uninterrupted by vestiges of our modern world.

Depending upon wind direction, you may find yourself skimming above charming villages such as West Deeping, with its wonderful, quaint stone cottages.
Alternatively you may be blown gently towards Deeping St James, a picturesque village that grew up around a Benedictine priory, set like a jewel on the banks of the beautiful River Welland.

Turn off from the A1 at the Burghley roundabout and take the B1081 into town. Contunie straight over the river into St. Mary’s Hill, the road will now turn left into St. Mary’s Street. When the road next turns sharp right, you should turn left into Castle Street. On Castle Street turn first left into Castle Dyke, this will lead you down to the parking on Bath Row.
