The Royal Palace of Falkland belongs to Her Majesty the Queen and was the country residence of Stuart kings and queens when they hunted deer and wild boar in the Fife forest – it’s even home to the oldest tennis court in Britain! Mary, Queen of Scots spent some of the happiest days of her tragic life here, ‘playing the country girl in the woods and parks’. The palace was built between 1501 and 1541 by James IV and James V, replacing earlier castle and palace buildings dating from the 12th century, traces of which can still be seen in the grounds. Drifting over ancient orchards and immaculate lawns as you head out over the beautiful county of Fife you may wish to try your hand at that world famous royal wave. Who knows, her majesty may even be there to give you a regal mark out of ten! A better launch site than this, one will struggle to find…
