Witton Castle, County Durham

Witton Castle is clearly signposted from the A68 between
High Etherley & Witton-le Wear.

The entrance to the castle is 1km from the A68. Follow the road
down to the entrance barrier of the castle (show balloon ticket
if entrance barrier is manned). Cross over speed humps and bear
left along the road. The balloon launches from the large field in
front of the castle. Wait here for the Virgin Balloon Flights crew
and pilot to greet you.

Balloons Over - Bishop Auckland

Choose to fly over the captivating and rugged landscape of County Durham and you will take off from either Shincliffe or Witton Castle at Bishop Auckland, depending on the wind direction on the day. Both locations offer spectacular views as and your pilot will confirm the launch site on your flight line. Please take note of directions to both locations.

Lying to the north-east of the magnificent Yorkshire Dales National Park can be found the town of Bishop Auckland, the site of one of our most majestic launch-sites, complete with its own castle!

Dating back to the 1400's, Witton castle provides the most romantic backdrop for an ascent and being only four miles north-west of Bishop Auckland, travel to and from the site is simplicity itself.

Standing proudly on the south bank of the River Wear, the castle is overlooked by the village of Witton-Le-Wear, a one-time anglo-saxon settlement nestling on the opposite side of the valley.

Perhaps, during your flight, you will be fortunate enough to pass over Richmond, one of the most beautiful towns in England, or take a look at writer, Bram Stoker's Whitby, where Dracula landed to climb the steps to the abbey, the choice is endless.

Alternatively, you might find yourself drifting serenely over the nearby North York Moors or the lovely Yorkshire Wolds as you watch a constantly changing procession of heather moors, rolling hills, picturesque country towns and historic houses disappear beneath you.

Then again, you might find yourself following the famous North Yorkshire Moors Railway which starts at Pickering, or perhaps the Weardale Line from Bishop Auckland to Stanhope or maybe gazing down at the prosperous and attractive Harrogate.

With so much to see in every possible direction and so much history to absorb, the region is certainly suited to aerial and ground-based exploration.
