  Balloons Over - York Racecourse

One of the great capitals of the medieval world, York still remains encircled by its ancient city walls and is dominated by the soaring pinnacles of York Minster, the finest Gothic church in northern Europe.

The Virgin Hot Air Balloon launch site is situated at the famous York Race Course and is ideally located for aerial exploration of this beautiful city and its surrounding countryside.

With its many chic cafes and specialist shops lining its narrow streets, York is certainly a city that demands a visit pre or post flight to enjoy an hour or two absorbing its history and culture over a meal or a glass or two of the local ale.

You might find yourself drifting serenely over the nearby North York Moors or the lovely Yorkshire Wolds as you watch a constantly changing procession of heather moors, rolling hills, picturesque country towns and historic houses disappear beneath you.

Magnificent landmarks such as the famous Castle Howard, made famous in the production, Brideshead Revisited and Thirsk, the Darrowby in the James Herriot stories, compete for your attention, demanding a visit by air or on the ground.

Perhaps you will be fortunate enough to pass over Richmond, one of the most beautiful towns in England, or take a look at writer, Bram Stoker's Whitby, where Dracula landed to climb the steps to the abbey, the choice is endless.

Alternatively you may find yourself over the famous North Yorkshire Moors Railway, which starts at Pickering, or the prosperous and attractive Harrogate.

With so much to see in every possible direction and so much history to absorb, Yorkshire is certainly a county suited to aerial and ground-based exploration.

Whatever the direction the wind takes you, you are guaranteed a truly memorable flight and a warm welcome in this famous, beautiful and historic county.
