Enjoy an unforgettable hot air balloon ride over Bishop Auckland and see the captivating and rugged landscape of County Durham with a flight from our beautiful Witton Castle launch site.
Lying to the north-east of the magnificent Yorkshire Dales National Park, this is one of our most majestic launch locations, offering spectacular views and is the closet hot air balloon ride to Durham itself.
Out to the east as you drift up, up and away in our Bishop Auckland hot air balloon, you may spot the North Sea Coast. Stretching from Tyneside to Saltburn, look out for the ships lying at anchor waiting to go into Teesport.
To the north, Durham city is easily distinguished by the beautiful outline of Durham Cathedral on top of the hill.
Drifting across to the east of Durham you will see the incredible valleys beyond the River Wear, while west you’ll see the magnificent and rugged North Pennines behind Hamsterley Forest.
South over Teesdale, your hot air balloon ride over Bishop Auckland could bring into view Raby Castle and beyond, to the outlines of the North York Moors and Yorkshire Dales.
There is truly stunning scenery whichever way the wind takes our big red Bishop Auckland hot air balloon in this glorious region.
A hot air balloon ride over County Durham is a once-in-a-lifetime adventure you don’t want to miss.
Our Bishop Auckland hot air balloon pilot Chris Oxby and his crew look forward to see you in the North East skies!

From the South take the A68 from West Auckland towards Corbridge. Follow the A68 turning left in Etherley, after which you will pass the 68 Café. Drop down the hill about 1km to a crossroads and turn right (signposted for Escomb Saxon Church). From the North, head down the A68 towards West Auckland, and after you have passed Witton-Le-Wear look out for the Witton Castle hoardings in a field on your left. At the crossroads turn left (signposted for Escomb Saxon Church).
The entrance to Witton Castle is about half a mile down on your left hand side. Look out for the Holiday Homes for Sale signs.
Drive down the track through the barrier (if it is down, security will open it for you), and continue past the office. You will now see our big launch field on your left. Turn left at the bottom and drive round to the car park at the castle, then walk back up to meet us on the field.
