Half the population was made homeless by the Great Fire Of Nantwich, started accidentally by a brewer in December 1583. The fire burned for 20 days and destroyed 150 houses, inns and other buildings. Queen Elizabeth I was so affected by the event that she ordered a nationwide collection of funds to rebuild Nantwich and herself donated £1,000 – not far off half a million pounds in today’s money.
