A hot air balloon ride over Canterbury, Kent, starts from Northgate on the north eastern side of the cathedral city. Steeped in history and embraced by the Roman city walls, a balloon flight over Kent will certainly not disappoint.
Not surprisingly as a result of the history, heritage and stunning architecture, some parts of the city have been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Spotting ruins from the basket of your hot air balloon ride over Canterbury city will be easier than you imagine with picture perfect moments for you to treasure forever. Can you spot the city walls and gates, Kings School, St Augustine’s Abby or Canterbury Castle?
Rising skywards from Northgate, you’ll recognise the great River Stour and to the north east you can spot the beautiful Vauxhall Lakes. To the west you may catch a glimpse of the sprawling woodland including that of Homestall, Church, Willows, Grimshill and North Bishopden Woods. To the south west you may see Ashford in the distance, the popular agricultural market town where our Kent Gliding Club balloon flight launch site lies.
As you float on the wind, your hot air balloon ride over Canterbury offers chimney top sights and the most beautiful perspective of the ‘Garden of England’s’ countryside, whichever way the wind blows, a hot air balloon ride over Canterbury is one not to be missed.
From the A2 take the A2050 towards Canterbury. Go across the first roundabout onto Rheims Way. At the next roundabout (St Peters roundabout) turn left onto St Peters Pl (A290). This road goes to the left and passes the “west gate”, immediately at the next roundabout turn right onto North Lane. At the next roundabout go straight across onto St Stephens Road. Approximately a quarter of a mile on the right hand side, directly opposite St Stephens Close, is a small access road with a steel barrier. The launch site, which is one of the fields belonging to St John’s C of E Primary School, is through this barrier and approximately 100 yards along on the right hand side. Please note that this barrier will only be opened 30 minutes before the scheduled meeting time and is located to the west of the school, over a river.
*Please do not go to or park up at St John’s C of E Primary School itself.*
